A head scratching 63-59 loss to UAB right after a dominant 93-84 win over the third best team in the country in Louisville. A horrible loss to Belmont after missing 26 free throws. But also a dominant win over #1 Michigan State in the Berslin Center. As a UNC fan you do not know what Carolina team will walk out of the tunnel. Will it be the Tar heel team with the deep bench and great energy or the one who gives up to quickly?
The first two months of the season as a team is about finding yourself, figuring out what your identity is. Carolina has discovered they can play very well or really bad. Now don’t forget Carolina has beaten two of the nation’s top teams without arguably their two best players in Leslie McDonald and P.J. Hairston. While the deep front line of the Tar Heels is one of the best and deepest with Meeks and Brice Johnson also coming off the bench.
Carolina elevates into top ten talent with outside scorers (Paige and Hairston). Only Villanova and Arizona are the only two teams are undefeated. As we all know this Tar Heel team is not the usual Tar Heel team that we are used to.
Yes they are fast paced! Yes they are athletic! But we have never seen a Carolina team arguably like this in over ten year with the ups and downs this team has had already in these first two months, with the potential to be an Elite eight team.
What we know about Carolina is they need another three point threat. Carolina has only made twenty-one three pointers this season. Marcus Paige has made eighteen of the twenty one made three pointers. That is unacceptable as a Unit!
This is why Hairston is such a valuable element to this team. In the 2012-2013 season he shot 40% from the three point line. We also know the frontcourt of the Tar heels is surpassing expectation. Brice Johnson had a huge game against Michigan State with 14 points, 2 blocks, and 6 rebounds in twenty-five min. played and also ACC Freshman Player of the Week Kennedy Meeks that finished with 15 points, 7 rebounds, and a beautiful cross-court pass to Marcus Paige for a clutch three pointer in the second half of the game against the Spartans.
Since being at Carolina this might be the most talented but inexperienced team Roy Williams has had since being here. As a Tar Heel fan, the unpredictability of this team excites you to watch their game regardless of who they play.
The #18 Tar heels(6-2) will be playing the #11 Kentucky Wildcats(8-2) on Saturday December 14th at 5:15 on ESPN.
